Regional Western Australia is now experiencing
unprecedented mobile and internet coverage, thanks to the completion of the $40
million Regional Mobile Telecommunications Project (RMCP), made possible by the
State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
The Flint and Mawby sites in the Wheatbelt are the
final two towers under RMCP which has now successfully delivered 113 towers
across nine regions, improving coverage in the State by more than 22 per cent.
RMCP has boosted mobile and internet reception across 95,000 square kilometres
and provided almost continuous coverage along Highway 1.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the
successful partnership between Telstra and the State Government has
significantly contributed to improving the liveability and sustainability of our
regional, rural and remote communities. Mobile and internet
connectivity is vital to social and economic development in regional areas and
the RMCP has been crucial in breaking down the digital divide between rural and
urban Western Australia.
