Expansion of Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre

Expansion of Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre

Project status: Completed 2014

The ageing Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre was recently expanded to meet the needs of its diverse and rapidly growing population.

In addition to its large theatre, it now boasts:

  • A 250 seat flat floor theatre suitable for smaller performances, meetings, conferences and indoor sports events
  • Improved mobility access
  • Increased foyer space
  • Break-out rooms and function / meeting rooms
  • Improved commercial catering and bar facilities
  • More administration offices

The project also includes the fit out of theatre equipment (lighting, audio, theatre curtains) in the new studio, an upgrade of the air conditioning system and refurbishment of carpets and seating in the existing auditorium and foyer.

The expansion allows for an increase in the number of theatrical performances and touring shows being attracted to the region. It will also create opportunities for more youth and inclusion.

Previously, its 800-seat theatre was not able to cater well for smaller performances and its layout limited the suitability for large conference events. There was also limited access for the mobility impaired.

The $12.5 million redevelopment was funded by:

  • $7.47 million from Royalties for Regions
  • $5.03 million from City of Bunbury

The Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre is a vital asset to the wider South West region as patrons attend major events from towns such as Darkan and Manjimup.

The building is council-owned and is run by Bunbury Regional Theatre, on behalf of the City of Bunbury.
